Businesses will have a chance to learn about the major advantages of solar power on oct. 4 during the symposium on solar. office of governmental affairs to work on legislative analysis and developing energy commission recommendations to the legislature and governor's office. sue also served as principal author of two major policy reports the 1990 conservation report and the governor's 1992 biennial report ; . following her assignments on those reports, she went back to program work on the energy commission's electric vehicle program. during that time sue and her staff developed and implemented an electric vehicle incentive program, the electric vehicle emergency responder training program, amendments to the state building code to adopt uniform electric vehicle charging standards, and developed training materials for building officials and emergency responders to familiarize them with electric vehicle technologies. sue also worked for a short time at the california air resources board on the implementation of the zero-emission vehicle regulations. sue was recruited back to the energy commission to sell or dismantle pvusa in davis. pvusa was successfully sold to the city of davis. in the last several years sue led the commission's rule making to revise mandatory oil industry reporting requirements and managed a major database migration project to convert 20 years of oil industry data into a modern database. several reports on gasoline prices and oil supplies were managed by sue in response to price spikes. her last assignment at the energy commission was in the public interest energy research program where she supervised a staff of 9 employees, 12 contractors, and graduate students to implement research studies and fund projects. sue is a master windsurfing instructor, certified advanced scuba, and a trained meeting facilitator. sue taught classes on the legislative and state budget process for the california journal magazine. she has received awards and recognition from calseia the solar hall of fame ; , the california building officials association, the national seia, and the energy commission for her work. for more information on the symposium on solar, please contact mikki gilbert at 337-2718.

This spring, gmtv became the first itv company to invest in xdcam, buying in a pdw-510p camcorder and two pdw-1500 compact decks for use on the breakfast show. xdcam is sony's revolutionary disc-based recording system. it writes to next generation optical discs which can read 23 gigabytes of information. recording and storing on xdcam disc brings significant time-savings when it comes to editing: instant access to any shot and no need to digitise or spool through rushes to get to the footage you want. there is even a feature to call up thumbnails of each scene to help with selection. why did gmtv make the move? "to be at the forefront of technology, to open up new workflows, to make existing workflows faster, to increase the ability of producers to see what they are doing, and to add the ability to desk top edit. in a nutshell, all the added value elements that are not available with tape, " says geoff wright, gmtv's head engineer. "in the overall process it makes life a lot quicker." about a third quicker, he says. "with xdcam you can even edit on camera, so you can do a rough edit instead of playing through 40 minutes of footage." two camcorders, the pdw-510p and the pdw-530p, and three decks the pdw-1500 compact deck, the pdw-v1 mobile deck and the pdw-d1 drive unit for working with non-linear systems currently make up the standard definition xdcam series. using a choice of compression schemes dvcam or mpeg imx footage is recorded to disc along with its metadata and low resolution proxy copies of recordings. for those already using dvcam, this ensures interoperability; and non-linear editors including the xpri systems have been designed with the xdcam series in mind. on the itv breakfast show, the xdcam set-up is typically used for feature shoots to be inserted into the main programme behind-the-scenes footage of new television shows, for example. "so far the kit has made the right impression on the producers that have used it they are able to see what they are doing much more easily, " says wright. the xdcam system offers the facility to export low resolution proxy clips very quickly to a laptop or other non-linear editing system using a standard networking interface and cable. the producer can then use the proxy clips for the edit and let the system conform the selected footage. "on one recent job, a producer created a rough edit on her desktop. on tape the whole thing would have had to be ingested into our video serves and she would have had to move from her desk to do an off-line edit. the edit decision list would then have gone to an edit suite where she would have made her final changes. now a producer can make all the production decisions at their desk without wasting time in edit, " says wright. buying into xdcam is a significant move for gmtv because they usually work with crews and kit supplied by itn. "we wanted to bring some resources back in-house, " explains wright. the new kit will be available for use either by staff or freelance crew. "as technology moves forward, the old video rules don't apply. now, moving video files around is becoming as easy as moving word files, " he adds. wright is particularly interested in technology which transfers broadcast files between locations faster than real-time. "everything we do is about enabling correspondents to be more news reactive and xdcam is part of that.
