This month's cover is of a friend billy kurtz. i met him at lago vista he was figuring out how he could give our tbi junior team each a water bottle. over the next year or so he became a regular writer for the racing post, an advertiser and a friend. he lives in both worlds mountain and road. he's this year's sponsor of the 2007 billy kurtz texas mountain bike state championship series. earlier in the month, we all found out that billy's relationship with state farm was severed, but he's keeping his commitment to sponsor the race series. talking to him after the event, his words to me were reassuring about himself and his family, knowing that he had lots more to do in this world so the career speed-bump was only that. well, i'd say so. he's a man on fire. saturday he took 2nd by less than a wheel ; in a blazing sprint at the heights crit on his road bike and the next day 4th at warda on his 29" fat tire bike. the cover shows his number - #1 and he is. on a more mundane note, once a year i see a bunch of old friends at the senior games. this is competition done the right way everyone smiles, yet the contests are real. there are usually four events two tougher-than-you-think time trials of 5 and 10 k and two road races of 10 and 20k. they are held all over texas and in all the other states with qualifiers going to the state and then national competition. these began as part of the athletic program from the us dept of health's council on the aging's effort at keeping us alive. starting at age 50, you can compete in a bevy of sports and games designed to encompass all of us oldsters. shuffleboard is a real event here. in the old days, if you showed up with shaved legs you were a distinct minority since there were guys with horns, bells and baskets on their bikes. four or five years ago, things changed. no longer is it a couple of duffers and their dime store bikes it's full on, expensive toy racing. there are lots of real tt dream machines and just like in uscf racing, there are lots of high end carbon wheels, frames and all sorts of speed toys. many of the guys travel all over the state and country doing these things. it's not as intense as txbra or uscf racing and it's not as taxing with the shorter distances and all. i guess the biggest difference is that everyone gets to know each other and have fun. i mean lunch is usually provided and everyone settles down to a hotdog or something similar and swap lies. the road races are usually interesting as there is little team work, but some honor among friends with the uscf racers usually going away from the less proficient newbies. the time trials, though are wide open and hard. you may think 5k is an easy distance but, it's too long to sprint and too short to really pace yourself well. what's really interesting is that age groups go up by year increments and have both a men and women's division. at the end of the day there are awards and applause but, more than that, a real sense of accomplishment and joy. this is the joy of competing as well as the joy of being alive. i've been doing these things long enough to notice and to play omaha poker. poker players Be rented from mid-state golf car. 315-386-5988 ; . rental rates are per day for 2 passenger units and per day for 4 passenger units. 4. i camping at the fairgrounds, must i leave my pet at home?
